Despite many advancements in transplantation research, there are still several hurdles that need to be overcome to improve success rates and access to organ transplantation. Static cold preservation systems are currently used to preserve donor organs prior to transplantation, but they can only maintain the organs in healthy states for a relatively short period—from a few hours to less than a day depending on the organ. Thus, new methods to store organs in healthy conditions for longer periods are needed, as this will improve transplant success rates. There is also a worldwide shortage of organs available for transplantation, as the number of patients waitlisted for organ transplants continues to grow with no corresponding rise in the number of suitable donors or donor organs, necessitating the development of methods to expanding the use of organs from marginal donors, whose organ health may not be considered ideal for transplantation, to increase the donor organ pools.

Preservation methods for transplant organs Organ quality can be improved
Organ transplantation is a safe and often life-saving treatment option for patients suffering from organ failure. Advances in operating techniques, basic understanding of immunology, rejection prophylaxis/therapy and, last but not least, organ preservation have paved the way for long-term success in transplantation medicine. However, the shortage of donor organs remains a fundamental problem. F...
متن کاملPersufflation (gaseous oxygen perfusion) as a method of heart preservation
Persufflation (PSF; gaseous oxygen perfusion) is an organ preservation technique with a potential for use in donor heart preservation. Improved heart preservation with PSF may improve outcomes by maintaining cardiac tissue quality in the setting of longer cold ischemia times and possibly increasing the number of donor hearts available for allotransplant. Published data suggests that PSF is able...

Liver or hepatic transplantation (LT) is the replacement of a diseased liver with part or whole healthy liver from another person (allograft). Human liver transplants were first performed by Thomas Starzl in the United States and Roy Calne in Cambridge, England in 1963 and 1967, respectively. Liver transplantation is a viable treatment option for end-stage liver disease and acute liver failure....

INTRODUCTION The European Machine Preservation Trial (MPT) found a significantly lower rate of delayed graft function and improved graft survival in machine-perfused kidneys compared to cold-stored kidneys in the first year following kidney transplantation. Little is known about the cost-effectiveness of various organ preservation methods. METHODS Outcome data from the MPT have been used to c...
متن کاملPersufflation (or gaseous oxygen perfusion) as a method of organ preservation.
Improved preservation techniques have the potential to improve transplant outcomes by better maintaining donor organ quality and by making more organs available for allotransplantation. Persufflation, (PSF, gaseous oxygen perfusion) is potentially one such technique that has been studied for over a century in a variety of tissues, but has yet to gain wide acceptance for a number of reasons. A p...
